Text Box: Sharron Angle Leads Local Efforts To Support Troops
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2005
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Nevada State Assemblywoman Sharron Angle (R-Reno) has joined forces with the Department of Defense to support members of the Armed Forces and their families throughout Nevada.
The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) has partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) America Supports You program to raise awareness about the importance of supporting members of the Armed Forces, regardless of personal beliefs about the war.  Angle, NFWL’s Heart to Heart Veterans Team Leader for Nevada, will head up this initiative in her state.
“I am so impressed with the work Assemblywoman Angle has been doing in Nevada to support the men and women who bravely serve their nation,” said NFWL President & CEO Robin Read.  “With Veteran’s Day on November 11th we are reminded that America must continue to honor the members of our Armed Forces.  Today’s troops are tomorrow’s veterans and Assemblywoman Angle recognizes just how important it is to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of these men and women.”
"Women legislators have continuously been a source of strong support for our military men and women," said Allison Barber, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.  "We are excited about this partnership with the America Supports You program and the National Foundation for Women Legislators and look forward to working with the NFWL and its membership of elected women leaders in every state and territory.  We are grateful to Assemblywoman Angle for serving as the Heart to Heart Team Leader in Nevada, leading NFWL's efforts to support our nation's heroes."
Angle will work with NFWL and the DoD during the next year to promote the America Supports You program, by mobilizing constituents to join local organizations that carry-out activities in support of members of the Armed Forces through town hall meetings, visits to local elementary schools, and various press events.
Since the launch of NFWL’s Heart to Heart Veterans Team Leader Program in November 2003, women elected officials from every state and territory in the nation have been serving as Team Leaders to reach out to veterans and active duty service men and women in their states.   Past initiatives have included the Veterans History Project, Valentines for Veterans and Troops overseas, and the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.  Through the NFWL Heart to Heart program these women legislators have partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Disabled American Veterans, the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, Office Depot, and most recently, the U.S. Department of Defense.
