Text Box: ANGLE CHALLENGES REID TO RULE OUT ALITO FILIBUSTER
Assemblywoman defends conservative judge against Harry Reid’s "culture of obstruction"
Reno, NV – Today, Assemblywoman and second district congressional candidate Sharron Angle challenged Senator Harry Reid to rule out the use of the filibuster against Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, and allow an up-or-down vote without delay. While other Senate Democrats such as Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) have publicly stated their opposition to a filibuster, Senator Reid has pointedly not ruled it out.
Angle stated, "After a distinguished fifteen years on the federal bench and a full week of intense public hearings at the Senate Judiciary Committee, it is clear that Judge Alito is very well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. Even some of the more liberal Democrats like Senator Dianne Feinstein have ruled out a filibuster. It would be a real disgrace to Nevadans if the only ones seeking to derail Judge Alito were a few liberal extremist groups and our own Senator Harry Reid."
Angle, who in 2003 led the fight in both Nevada’s legislature and its courts to preserve our state’s supermajority requirement in order to raise taxes, continued, "In Nevada, we have first hand experience with an activist State Supreme Court that believes it can re-write the state constitution. That’s the last thing we need on the U.S. Supreme Court, and that’s why it’s so important that Judge Alito be confirmed. I urge Senator Harry Reid to conclude with his culture of obstruction and instead represent common sense Nevada values instead of the national liberal special interests, and once and for all drop all plans to filibuster this fine man."
